IF YOU THINK YOU'RE HAVING A STROKE... B.E.F.A.S.T!
TIME LOST IS BRAIN LOST.
San Antonio Regional Hospital is a Certified Primary Stroke Center providing care that meets the highest national standards for stroke treatment. Stroke victims typically have a crucial time window to receive the most effective treatment, which can include the use of clot-breaking medication (tPA) within the first 4.5 hours or even endovascular intervention (mechanical thrombectomy) to remove the clot within the first 24 hours from the onset of symptoms. Receiving designation as a Primary Stroke Center means that San Antonio has proven it provides rapid, state-of-the-art care to stroke victims, significantly improving their outcomes.
Another outstanding feature of our Stroke Program is the availability of specially trained Nurse Navigators who are Registered Nurses. These RNs closely follow every patient and collaborate with the patient and their family on a plan of care. They help prepare for any procedure that is necessary, for example the administration of medication to dissolve a clot in the brain. The RN also provides education to the patient and family and helps with discharge needs to prepare for the transition home.
The Stroke Center at San Antonio Regional Hospital follows the recommendations and guidelines as outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA).
